Tips and Ideas
Gates are high traffic areas. We open and close them all day long, the horses
lean into them, and (if you are like me) they sometimes get bumped by the
tractor. They take a lot of abuse. When a gate is working it helps keep the
horses in the pasture, but when it falls or gets really abused the horses can get
out.
Gates are almost always attached to a fence post. Fence posts are usually
made out of wood. The problem with that is that wood rots, wood breaks, and
sometimes latches and hinges get ripped right out of fence posts. The last
thing you want is to have a horse lean against a gate and have the hinges pull
free from the post. So what I do is tie a rope around the gate and the post.
A rope tied around the gate and the post will due to things. One, it will
work as a secondary latch. I have had horses that have learned just how
to bump a latch to get it open. Secondly, it will hold the gate in place if it
should fall off the hinges, or if the latch should come undone.
A small piece of rope tied on each end of the gate is a simple and
economical way to ensure your horses safety.
